Full of pristine beaches, nature and culture

real estate in Guanacaste

Guanacaste is by far, my favorite province in Costa Rica. It is located on the Norhtwest of the country. It borders with Nicaragua to the north, Alajuela to the East, Puntarenas to the South and the Pacific Ocean to the West. Liberia is the capital of the province, with a population of approximately 98,751 people. The total population of the province is around 350,000. Because of its characteristics and beauty, it is a very desirable area for expats and investors. Guanacaste real estate is always an excellent option to consider in Costa Rica.

Why is Guanacaste unique?

Glad you asked. Guanacaste is unique because of it reach culture and natural resources. As a matter of fact, most of the culture of Costa Rica comes from Guanacaste. The bailes típicos, the food and the bull ridding events have its origin in this beautiful province.

Guanacaste is also known for its warm weather. All throughtout the province temperatures range from 93°F to 104°F during most of the year, but there area a few exceptions. La Cruz right on the Nicaraguan border is a little bit cooler and windy because of its altitude. Also, in Tilaran the weather is much cooler (69-82°F) all year round. Tilaran is also very rainy, most of the year.

Natural beauty and natural resources in Guanacaste have no limit. For example, 4 of the nine active volcanoes of Costa Rica are located in Guanacaste. These are: Orosi, Rincon de la Vieja, Miravalles and Tenorio. This has been very beneficial for Costa Rica and Guanacaste, as they are good sources of geothermal energy. Actually, Costa Rica has 8 geothermal energy projects. Together they produce 330 MW of energy. All of these projects are located in Guanacaste.

Guanacaste also has 6 of the 32 national parks of Costa Rica, some of them being among the largest like Area de Conservación Guanacaste y Santa Rosa. For example, Palo Verde National Park is famous for the amount of birds, both local and those that migrate, which could be found in the area.

Are the volcanoes safe to visit?

Of course you had to ask about the volcanoes. Guanacaste is about 3,915 sq. miles in size. Not a very large territory to have 4 active volcanes, all of them very close to each other. Just to give you an idea, you can travel from Rincon de La Vieja to Miravalles in less than 1 hour. However, they are fairly safe to be around. You cannot go up to the crater of those volcanoes. But there is a lot you can do around them. For example, Rincón de la Vieja is famous for its waterfalls, walking trails, and hot springs. As a matter of fact, many hotels have come to the area to take advantage of these natural riches. Miravalles is also famous for the natural hotsprings around it. If you are more for walking and looking out for birds, snakes and other types of wildlife, Tenorio will be the place to go.

Beaches in Guanacaste

When you say Guanacaste, most people in Costa Rica inmmediately things about the beach. Of course, when you have more than 400 miles of coast line, it is inevitable to think about the beach. Choose your type of beach and Guanacaste will probably have it. Secluded beaches, black sand beaches, white sand beaches, surfing beaches, you just pick what you want.

Among the most famous beaches are: Coco, Hermosa, Tamarindo, Flamingo, Samara, Nosara, Avellanas, Grande, Conchal and the list could go on. Conchal is actually amazing, instead of sand, the beach is made up of smashed conch shell, giving it a spectacular color.

Another well known area is the Papagayo Golf, which hosts the Andaz Hotel and the Four Seasons Hotel, with its Aaron Palmer Golf Course. The Hacienda Pinilla area is also a well known spot. This is where the JW Marriot is located. We will be talking more about Guanacaste beaches in our different blog posts.

By the way, these are Pacific Ocean beaches where the weather is actually warm to swim on. Check out what we are talking about in this video:

And, what about the economy?

As we said, Guanacaste is very rich in natural resources and attractions. However, there is a feeling that it is one of the most abandoned areas by the Costa Rican government. Jobs are scarce and most people had to leave Guanacaste to go pursue a college education. This has been chaging some in the last few years.

The second largest international airport of Costa Rica, Daniel Oduber Airport, is located in Liberia. Just imagine this, you get off the plane, and in about 30 to 40 minutes you are in your hotel or condo right on the beach. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Some companies like Coca Cola and Sykes have decided to start operations in Guanacaste. So, we hope the area will start to depend on other areas of business, not just tourism.

If you are going to buy a second home, Guanacaste is the place to go

Condos, farms, lots, beach houses, hotels, villas, luxury homes overlooking the ocean. Whatever you can think of, in terms of real estate in Guanacaste, it is possible.

Most expats make Guanacaste their retirement destination. Towns like Coco and Tamarindo, right on the beach have become the home for many people, mainly from Canada and US. People looking for more quiet towns can go to Ocotal, Brasilito, Potrero or Hermosa, and still be close enough to good shopping and dinning places.

Real estate investment projects in Guanacaste, like Pacifico and Coco Bay Estates in Playas del Coco, Hacienda Pinilla in Santa Cruz, and Reserva Conchal, offer a wide variety of real estate investment options. Lots of people also buy their second home or vacation home in Guanacaste, as we said, you can take a plane in New York on December at 6am in the morning and be swimming in the warm Costa Rican beaches by 1pm in the afternoon.
